Pit Stop for Driving Safety Tips

NASCAR Nationwide Series™ driver (and fan favorite of Lloyd Pro Group, your Atlanta Insurance Agency) Penske Racing star Brad Keselowski puts it in easy terms we all can understand. He says, “In a race car, I feel invincible because I have all this equipment—helmet, six-point harness, and safe walls around me, but when I get in a regular car, I’ve only got a seatbelt and no helmet, so I don’t have that same comfort zone.” It’s  a perspective we don’t commonly think about.

On the track, the Penske Racing team member is normally seen behind the wheel of the No. 22 Dodge Charger by Discount Tire. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe in daily traffic and keep your Atlanta car insurance rates low:

1. Maintain your vehicle. Do a quick walk-around before you get into your car. Ensure that your tires are inflated to the pressure (PSI) noted in your car owner’s manual- not more, not less.
2. Don’t touch the cell phone. Keep distractions to a minimum when driving. And don’t even think about texting or sneaking a peek at smart phone apps.
3. Use your seatbelt. In 2009, 84 % of the population wore seatbelts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). But that also means 16% of people didn’t. It’s hard to imagine.
4. Pay attention to road conditions. Take additional caution during and after rain, in loose gravel, and in the heat of summer, when oils from the blacktop may create a hazardous driving surface. See Slick Roads and Summer Rains.
5. Make exercising caution into a habit. Take a glance at your mirrors and look for open spots in the lanes ahead of you in case you have to change your path quickly. Also, stay at least two seconds behind the car in front of you so you can stop safely.

Keselowski reminds us that “One of the biggest things you can do to keep yourself out of danger is to be aware. You need to know what the next guy is going to do before he does it. But you also need to share responsibility for safety.” Nationwide Series site

Good news for Atlanta’s Senior Drivers!

Lloyd Pro Group, your favorite Atlanta Insurance agency, representing Nationwide in Atlanta, has some great news for our drivers, no matter what age! Seasoned drivers are like fine wine- they are getting better! How ya like them (grapes?)

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently released a report with some great news! The study found that older drivers have been involved in fewer serious accidents and are able to keep their licenses longer. Fatal crashes per licensed driver older than 70 decreased by 37% (WOW!) over the past 10 years.

Keeping their licenses longer:

• Previously, 73% of drivers over 70 years old maintained their licenses, but now the number is more than 78% who are able to keep their licenses, even with the tighter restrictions.

• Senior drivers in Georgia must renew their driver’s licenses in person at age 64 or older, when their license is up for renewal. At this time, they will be asked to take a basic vision exam, and possibly a written/knowledge test based on the driver’s handbook. Twenty six states have set provisions for maintaining their licenses.

Statistics rank higher:

• Drivers older than 80 were involved in less than 50% of crashes and 20% fewer crashes without reported injuries. Younger drivers were involved in only less than 20% of crashes and did not drop for those crashes involving injuries.

• The reason for this statistic may be because of a variety of factors: vehicles are safer, seniors are healthier, and states have begun to monitor senior drivers more closely.
