Did you know that some insurance agencies were canceling insurance policies because of dangerous dog breeds?
This news story is about the pit bulls waiting to be adopted at the local Massachusetts dog pound before they are euthanized. One woman is interviewed that filled out the paperwork to take her new dog home when she called her home insurance company to check in with them about her decision. She was very surprised to hear that the insurance company warned her that if the dog bit someone they would pay for the first bite but would then automatically cancel her insurance policy.
The news reporter goes on to share that some insurance carreirs will cancel you just for having one of the dogs that have been “blacklisted”. Other insurance companies will increase your premiums to help offset the risk. The ineligible dog breed list contains dogs such as:
- Akita
- Chow
- Doberman
- Rottweiler
- Pit bull
Several insurance companies have made their decisions due to the high rate of dog bites from these breeds. Some homeowners are crying discrimination as not all dogs will bite. Many are very submissive and gentle with children. In Massachusetts a possible law to prevent discrimination against dog breeds is under review.
How to protect your family pet
Some insurance companies will make exceptions if the dog enrolled and passed the American canine good citizenship program. Be a responsible owner by teaching your dog to obey. Always keep a dog on the leash when in public and make sure you have a fenced yard that will contain the animals from running out in the street.
