Insurers denying Chinese drywall claims

What is smells like rotten eggs and corrodes your copper pipes?

An A/P story tells us that it’s Chinese drywall that was imported to Florida during the construction boom of 2004-2008.  Tens of thousands of homes were built using this gypsum board. Apparently it has traces of strontium sulfide, which can produce a rotten-egg odor, along with additional organic compounds not found in traditional American-made drywall.

Now as if a rotten egg smell wasn’t enough… homeowners are also complaining that the fumes are corroding copper pipes, destroying their TVs and air conditioners, and even blackening jewelry and silverware. Some believe the sheet rock is also making them sick.

When claims were made against their home insurance policy, they were not only denied, but some policies have actually been canceled.

Why?

Notice what one insurance company representative said:

“If someone were to have bought a new car and there was a defective part, would that person go to their auto insurance to get that fixed or would they go back to the manufacturer?” Kuczwanski said. “We provide insurance, not warranty service.”

The US government is examining the situation to see how they may be able to help these homeowners.
