Plunging Temperatures Make Home Insurance Claims Soar

November 19th, 2009 by Lloyd Pro Group Inc.

Why do home owner insurance claims tend to rise during the winter time?

First and foremost, during the months of December through February it is not uncommon for temperatures to drop well below the freezing mark. This results in frozen pipes that burst with water to damage drywall, furniture and belongings. Has this ever happened to you before? Do you know someone that has experienced this nightmare?

What can you do to protect yourself?  Here are three suggestions you can put into practice starting tonight:

  • The experts tell us to pay attention to the weather reports before you go to sleep at night. If there is a freeze warning then don’t forget to let your faucets in the kitchens and bathrooms drip a little bit. Now I know that no  one likes a dripping faucet, however, I think you will find it is worth it instead of  dealing with a busted pipe later on!
  • As regards your outdoor water faucets, you can pick up from your local hardware store an insulated cap that fits over these for the winter months. It will only cost you a few dollars but will be worth the investment.
  • Have you ever heard of heat tape before? Heat tape is like an electric blanket for water pipes. It can be wrapped around exterior pipes and faucets to keep them warm during the cold winter nights. They do require a 110 volt outlet to plug into. Consult a licensed electrician before working with this product.

These are good reminders for everyone whether you own a home or not. Remember what grandma used to say, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. This combined with having an updated Atlanta home insurance or renters insurance policy can make all the difference in the world.
